Dear John:
Today is May Day, also known as International Workers Day. The origins of May Day began in Chicago in 1886 during the Haymarket
Massacre, where workers organized a strike to advocate for the 8 hour workday. Since then, the day stands for general workplace
reform, including reform for immigrants in the workplace.
The tragic Key Bridge collapse last month in Baltimore was yet another reminder that we need immigration reform that PROTECTS
IMMIGRANT WORKERS. Seven immigrant workers were killed by the bridge collapse.
Immigrants make up about a third of the construction workforce. They are proportionally MORE LIKELY to encounter hazardous
workplace conditions than other construction workers. In dangerous industries like construction and meat packing, immigrants fear
reporting unsafe conditions and risking loss of employment they desperately need to survive.
There is no more appropriate day than May Day to call on Congress to expand work permit authorizations and protect immigrants
from exploitation. Simply call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask for your Senator(s) or Representative. (Please
note: You are not required to give your full address or disclose your immigration status. Member offices only need your zip code.)
Tell them that it is time to expand work authorizations, Temporary Protected Status, and humanitarian parole for essential workers.
Your call can make a difference in the lives of millions of immigrants!
In solidarity,
Pablo Tapia, Chair, Civil Rights of Immigrants Campaign
