Hey John,
This week could be pivotal. The House is considering whether to move forward the awesome DELETE Act, which would establish a national “Do Not Call” list for data brokers. It lets everyone opt out from data broker websites with one click, and your representatives need to hear from you. Can you take five minutes and call them now? We’ve made it easy and even provided a script!
CALL NOW
It’s important to call this week because Congress is also considering a much weaker version of the DELETE Act as a part of the new federal privacy bill, APRA. This alternative version basically pretends it’s the DELETE Act, but on a closer read it actually fines data brokers less money than it would cost them to do an opt-out system, and it would require that we all opt out of 500+ individual websites.1 So we would still have to individually take care of our own data deletion requests, and data brokers wouldn’t actually be held accountable. What a nothingburger!
Imagine: this time next year, data brokers could be totally banned from listing your home address, cell phone, and intimate personal details for all your loved ones. Or, they could continue with “business as usual”—putting us all in danger while they continue to make billions.
Your calls could make the difference.
Let’s get ‘em.
