The current state of our democracy is alarming. Brexit was supposed to give ordinary people more control over their lives, but instead, it brought shocking levels of social division and a political culture that is nothing short of a disgrace.

Just this week, we’ve seen stories of Conservative Party staff running social media accounts riddled with Islamophobic, white supremacist and antisemitic disinformation aimed at undermining Sadiq Khan’s re-election campaign.

We’ve seen a desperate government announcing ice-hearted policies with little justification beyond pandering to the increasingly cruel right-wing of their party ahead of this week’s local elections.

And we’ve seen the owners of small import/export businesses up and down the country struggling to manage the chaotic consequences of the latest Brexit balls-up.

Things have to change. But the only tool we’ve got to make change happen - our democracy - is broken, and that’s a major problem.

While the next general election looks set to return a Labour government committed to ending at least some of the current government’s maddest policies, the heightened instability in our country and around the world will make governing extremely difficult and they may not make it to a second term in power. That’s when Farage and co will strike.

The well-organised and well-funded charlatans we have come to know in recent years will exploit the weaknesses in our democracy to get themselves into power. They will be newly emboldened and twice as effective, having learned in recent years how best to screw the system. They will help themselves to untold riches while making sure our interests always come second. And they will give their friends power and privilege while taking away our democratic and human rights. We’ll be trapped with no peaceful means of escape.

If we don't mobilise NOW and persuade Labour to prioritise fixing our democracy as soon as they get into power, we risk seeing them lose power in 2029 and our country slide into an authoritarian abyss. That’s a place where swindlers thrive, and ordinary people suffer…and none of us wants to go there.

The time to prevent this nightmare is NOW, while we still can.

The upcoming general election and the five years that follow it offer an opportunity to fix our democracy and use it to start building the future we want to see. Open Britain is ready to seize that opportunity!
