Friends, Colleagues, and Fellow Democrats,
Happy Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
This month is an opportunity to reflect on AANHPI history, and celebrate the AANHPI community’s culture, traditions, and contributions. Every day across our city, members of our community work to make Boston a better home for all of us, as they have for generations. My team is proud to carry on that tradition, amplifying the AANHPI voices calling for safety, opportunity, joy, and justice—and doing the work to make that vision a reality.
Boston is home to thriving AANHPI communities with leaders who have shaped our city for generations. Our Chinatown neighborhood—the third largest Chinatown in the country—has produced history-makers like Tunney Lee and Uncle Frank Chin, who dedicated their lives to making Boston a place of belonging for our AANHPI community. In Dorchester, our Vietnamese-American community has nurtured a vibrant community in Fields Corner, with Little Saigon earning an official cultural district designation from the state. These communities opened doors and pulled up chairs for a new generation of AANHPI leaders. Leaders who are stepping up in cities and towns across Massachusetts. Right next door in Cambridge, I’m proud to be building a coalition with City Manager Yi-An Huang.
It means so much to me to be celebrating this month with all of our Massachusetts Democrats who work tirelessly every day to ensure that we are hearing and honoring AANHPI perspectives, and learning from and celebrating AANHPI history. As the first Asian-American mayor of Boston, I am constantly inspired by the strength and courage of all those who made it possible for me and so many others to lead in our own time.
I am wishing all of you an Asian American, Native Hawaiian & Pacific Islander Month filled with prosperity and connection!
Sincerely,
Mayor Michelle Wu
