Hey there — Happy May Day!
Today, across the world, communities are celebrating laborers and the working class folks who have fought so hard to secure rights for workers, including the eight-hour workday and weekends.
The date was chosen to commemorate the four-day general strike in the U.S. in 1886 that culminated in the Haymarket Affair in Chicago, where people rallied for an 8-hour workday and workers ultimately lost their lives due to violence at the rally.
Before I got to Congress, I spent my entire career fighting for workers and their families. I’m *still* a dues-paying member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union and I’m proud to continue carrying the torch for workers every day I step into the House.
As a co-sponsor, I’m committed to finally passing the PRO Act and protecting every single person’s right to organize, hold employers accountable when they violate employees’ rights, and secure free, fair, and safe union elections.
The PRO Act has three critical components that will ensure workers are protected:
1.
The
PRO
Act
will
streamline
the
justice
process
for
union
busting
and
employer
retaliation
—
enhancing
the
right
for
workers
to
boycott
and
strike
2.
It
also
CLOSES
the
loopholes
in
current
labor
laws
to
hold
employers
accountable
for
violating
the
rights
of
their
employees
and
facilitate
collective
bargaining
agreements
3.
AND
the
PRO
Ac
t
aims
to
secure
free
and
fair
union
elections
so
that
union
leaders
are
empowered
to
represent
the
workers
Team — unions have never been stronger or more popular than they are right now. We’ve got to get the PRO Act over the finish line to continue building on the progress we’ve seen. That’s where you come in: will you add your name and support the PRO Act today? [[link removed]]
