John,
Today, Florida’s six-week criminal abortion ban goes into effect. Its implications are devastating, affecting not only Floridians but also millions of abortion patients across the Southern states.
This week also marks the anniversary of the Dobbs leak, and this ban serves as a reminder that the overturning of Roe was never the end; it was the beginning of a new assault. Florida has been a priority state of ours for years, and as the ban officially takes effect, here are five things to know:
1.) Florida state legislators wrote this ban. Abortion bans start in the states, which is why building pro-choice state legislatures is one of our top priorities. We must vote out the extremists responsible for this heinous bill in Florida, and we also have the opportunity to win pro-choice majorities in key states such as Arizona and Pennsylvania.
2.) The Florida Supreme Court upheld this ban. Across the country, State Supreme Courts are increasingly ruling on abortion cases—and these courts are often elected bodies. In November, we have opportunities to protect or gain pro-choice Supreme Court control in places like Michigan and Ohio. These races will be pivotal in protecting abortion access.
3.) Abortion is on the ballot. Every elected office has a role to play in protecting abortion rights, from county commissioners to district attorneys. And in several states, including Florida, voters will ALSO get to weigh in directly on abortion rights through ballot measures. Florida’s Amendment 4 campaign could restore abortion rights, and it’s absolutely critical that we pass it.
4.) Your dollar goes furthest now. Primary election season is in full swing, and NOW is the most critical time to build political power. With every gift of $6.11, we can register and turn out a pro-choice voter in a key district. Victory in November is possible, but we must lay the groundwork now.
5.) Abortion funds in Florida need your support! Practical support organizations remain steadfast in their commitment to help patients get care. If you need an abortion in Florida, resources are still available to you.
Today is undeniably challenging, but this ban underscores just how high the stakes are, and why we cannot afford to slow our work. Thank you for standing strong with us in this movement.
