Dear John,

This month's update has quite a heavy focus on Population, Health and Environment (PHE), which is an approach to community development that aims to improve access to primary health care services, particularly family planning and reproductive health, while also helping communities conserve biodiversity, manage natural resources and develop sustainable livelihoods.

In April, we co-hosted an event looking at PHE with two like-minded organisations, Population Connection and Population Media Center. We also launched a new action asking our political leaders to adopt PHE measures to help reverse biodiversity loss and improve the lives of many.

In the same week that we have a small delegation at the Commission on Population and Development in New York, we look at how we have built our international presence in recent years through working with partners. We also have an update on Spring Action Month and there is a deep dive into the practice of planned obsolescence.

The Commission on Population and Development is underway, and Population Matters plans to make a strong showing! Planned obsolescence: from lightbulbs to smartphones

Planned obsolescence is a strategy where companies intentionally create products with a limited lifespan. From smartphones to household appliances and even lightbulbs, it’s a practice that’s intended to maximise corporate profits at the expense of consumers and at great cost to the natural world.

Exploring the links between people, their health and the environment

On Tuesday 23 April, we welcomed two leading experts in a webinar looking at Population, Health and Environment. Dr Karen Hardee is the co-author of the recent report, Breaking Silos, and Dr Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka is the Founder and CEO of the Ugandan organisation, Conservation Through Public Health.

Population Health Environment (PHE) is a multisectoral approach to achieving environmental conservation, reproductive healthcare, and sustainable development goals. PHE has been proven to have better results than single sector projects, however it has been neglected as an approach by the UK government. We need your help to get PHE higher up the agenda.
