Indiana’s roads are seeing a lot less traffic these days – and that’s great news. It means Hoosiers are hunkering down, staying at home, and limiting the spread of COVID-19.

In fact, we learned today that vehicle traffic is down 40% during the week and over 50% on the weekends!

And while we’re not traveling, your Indiana Department of Transportation is out making sure our road and bridge projects continue, so that when it is time to hit the road again, it’ll be smooth sailing.

Here are a few ways they’re making that happen:

Community Crossings Grants
Community Crossings is the governor’s infrastructure program that assists local communities in the repair, ongoing maintenance, and improvement of their roads and bridges. While Governor Holcomb can’t be in each community to celebrate this year in-person, these local infrastructure projects will continue as planned.

217 Community Crossing grants are being awarded in 61 counties and 156 cities and towns…for a total of $126.5 million in matching grants! Check here to see if your county or community has been awarded funds!

Jumpstarting Road Construction
With fewer Hoosiers on the road, INDOT is jumpstarting road construction:

I-70 on the east side of Indianapolis will be closed for major repairs. Originally scheduled to take five months to complete, it will now be done in one month.
Section Six of I-69 (between Martinsville and Indianapolis) continues to move forward as scheduled.
Projects are occurring all over the state, including the Lloyd Expressway in Evansville and I-469 in Fort Wayne.

Remember – for the safety of all Hoosiers, travel should only be done when essential. Enforcement of Governor Holcomb’s latest order for Hoosiers to hunker down at home goes into effect at midnight tonight.
