Dear Friend,
For America’s youth, there is a growing trend of clinically diagnosed depression and anxiety. Overall feelings of hopelessness are reaching all-time highs across the country. We shouldn’t see this as just a chapter that will pass; we should see it as crisis that calls for our immediate attention.
Millions more teens in the United States are suffering from mental health conditions than ever before. With that rising rate comes illicit drug use, binge drinking, dangerous sex, and suicide. The entire family unit is affected by this crisis, both economically and spiritually.
The state of our young is of critical concern to me, and that’s why I have argued for a Department of Children and Youth. By not addressing the state of our young, we’re refusing to take responsibility for America’s future.

The level of chronic trauma experienced by our children today goes mostly unaddressed in our country. Millions of children lack consistent access to sufficient and nutritious food, millions lack healthcare, and millions go to schools lacking the school supplies needed to teach a child to read. A child who cannot read by the age of 8 has a drastically reduced chance of graduating from high school and a drastically increased chance of incarceration.
That is why establishing a U.S. Department of Children & Youth is more important than ever. When it comes to health, hunger, addiction, education, and safety – we are shirking our responsibilities as a nation of responsible adults. Child advocacy is not being addressed with the attention and care it deserves. Too many of our children are endangered physically and emotionally. I am doing everything possible to make the political establishment engage with this crisis.

Fewer people today are able to access the healthcare resources they need. When you look at the numbers, there are also steep racial disparities at play here. We must change the social determinants of health. I am proud of our Whole Health Plan [[link removed]] , the most comprehensive healthcare plan proposed by a Presidential candidate. All of these issues - physical health, mental health, economics - are connected. That's why we've needed an integrative thinker as President; someone who recognizes the intersectionality of our problems and would effectuate holistic solutions.
This campaign is proudly standing for transformational change in our political thinking. We must get beyond sports team politics and into problem solving politics. As long as I have a voice, I will be pushing the discourse towards the needs of all our people, most particularly our young. We're encouraging voters in all the remaining primary states to express an insistence on fundamental change.
Until such change occurs, we will continue to see the signs of a society in decline. We can reverse the trend but we need to do so now.
