John, I could not be more excited or optimistic that we are finally in the homestretch to end the failed and misguided war on drugs. Just this morning we received reports that the DEA plans to reclassify cannabis as a Schedule III substance [[link removed]] .

After leading this movement for more than 50 years, today is a highlight for my career. This action by the Biden-Harris Administration ties together many of our initiatives from racial justice, to research, to tax fairness and charts the path for more progress sooner.

Today's decision will do more to raise the profile of an issue very important to some of us but which has never gained the attention it deserves or the momentum it demands.

There is no going back. In this troubled Congress, it will also pave the path for building on our bipartisan cannabis caucus, an example where people can come together to work on something that can unite rather than divide us.

No politician was ever punished for being on the cutting edge of legalization of cannabis. In fact, legalization is not only good policy but is also an electric political issue [[link removed]] . John Fetterman won in 2022 because he embraced cannabis legalization and made it part of his platform. And in 2020, President Biden won Arizona because their marijuana ballot initiative drew progressive voters to the polls, turning out voters who otherwise would have stayed home. A point the Biden-Harris Administration is taking note of.

As NORML's "Godfather of Cannabis" and inaugural recipient of the "Earl Blumenauer Trailblazer Award," I look forward to continuing to lead this fight in Congress and in states across the country with advocates and the industry. The time is now to end the failed war on drugs once and for all.
