I just stumbled across this picture and I just had to share.
You guessed it, folks — that’s me, back in the 90s.
This young woman was getting ready for her first-ever internship and honestly had no idea she’d be the first Democratic woman to serve Illinois’ 13th District.
I learned so much in my formative years interning on the Hill, and without that opportunity, I wouldn’t be where I am or the person that I am today. I was able to learn from pragmatic, progressive leaders like Senator Paul Simon, and the lessons that I learned as a starstruck 18-year-old I’ve carried with me all these years later.
Those early experiences taught me that if we’re more empathetic to others’ experiences, we can find common ground and deliver real solutions, and I truly believe that’s what has helped me become the effective legislator I am today.
But I’m in a tough reelection fight, and our team could use a boost of grassroots energy before the end of April. So please, if you’re able to spare a contribution today, I’d be personally grateful for your support of our campaign.

Looking at the energy of our youth today gives me hope to know that our future is in good hands.
Thanks for taking a trip down memory lane with me.
