Yesterday, Mayor Breed joined San Franciscans to celebrate the JFK
Promenade's fourth anniversary.
As you may know, Mayor Breed issued
an emergency order closing JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park to vehicle
traffic in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Board of Supervisors approved the permanent ordinance
two years later and Mayor Breed signed legislation ensuring that JFK
Promenade remained vehicle-free on May 7, 2022.
Since then, dozens of improvements
were made to JFK Promenade, including easier access for seniors and
people with disabilities, additional parking spots, and a free shuttle
along the route. Mayor Breed's vision of an open space enjoyed by a
wide range of visitors was realized.
In November 2022, San Francisco
voters supported the earlier legislation, making the renamed 'JFK
Promenade' a permanent car-free space where people of all ages can
walk, cycle, scoot, skate, run, and find joy.
Today, JFK Promenade stands as a
testament to the vibrancy and joy of San Francisco. Its art
installations, live music, pianos, seating, lawn games, adirondack
chairs, and easy access are not just amenities but symbols of our
community's spirit.
Mayor Breed is justifiably
proud of this significant accomplishment. It shows what can be done to
improve our city by working together with a shared vision. Mayor Breed
and the community understood the importance of protecting the
Promenade and, together, made it permanent.
That's the kind of leadership San Francisco needs, John. We
must work together on shared goals with a common purpose: to improve
our city and the lives of every San Franciscan. We are grateful for
your past support, and we need it again today to help London Breed
secure another term as Mayor. Your contribution is invaluable to our
community's progress.
Thank you for being so
supportive,
— Team London Breed
