John,
Today, Donald Trump made clear once again that if elected, he would allow anti-choice extremists to dictate his policy, monitor pregnant patients, and criminalize providers.
In an extensive interview with Time Magazine, Trump dodged abortion questions over and over, insisting that the overturning of Roe left all abortion policy up to the states. And in an especially insulting string of answers, he teased an upcoming announcement on his Comstock policy—treating our fundamental rights like gambling chips in his political game.
The Comstock Act, an antiquated law from 1873, could be used to criminalize the shipping of any abortion-related materials, effectively banning all abortion care in the United States.
Trump refused to say whether he will enforce this zombie law, just like he refused to say whether he’ll sign a national abortion ban.
So let’s be clear: when Trump deflects abortion questions, it’s because he knows there’s an entire anti-choice infrastructure that he’s enabled to do his dirty work. MAGA politicians and courts are passing and enforcing laws that ban abortion, criminalize providers, and monitor pregnant patients.
We’re working to elect state legislators, judges, and local leaders who will combat these extremists, but we need your help. Will you support our Care is Not Criminal campaign?
In the coming months, Trump will continue to dodge questions on abortion, because he knows that abortion rights are wildly popular. Our job is to continue to hold him to his record, and to recognize that the anti-abortion movement he has empowered didn’t start with him, and won’t end with him.
To achieve reproductive freedom, we must elect pro-choice candidates at every level, ensuring that our courtrooms, city halls, and statehouses are filled with leaders who will fight for our reproductive freedom.
Thanks for your support,
Team Vote Pro-Choice
