“It is the impact of your work or your actions beyond yourself - how you contribute to the greater good - that translates into contentment.” - Dr. Robert Lustig
Dear John,
As National Volunteer Month comes to a close, we at Equality Virginia want you to know that volunteers and volunteerism is at the heart of the work we do. We invite you to continue the spirit of this month with us throughout the rest of 2024.
When American corporate capitalist culture insists that you have no resources to spare–no time, money, energy, or ideas–and encourages you to consume and compete … it’s worth questioning this narrative. When we witness people being celebrated for their authentic selves, it rekindles a deep connection within us. Surprisingly, we have more influence over our own well-being that we often realize. Acts of service, like volunteering, trigger a slow release of feel good chemicals in our brains–dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin, and endorphins–that bring a sense of fulfillment and joy.
Now, I understand some may argue that they’re already stretched thin with the demands of daily life. However, serving others can actually replenish our own reserves. Our fundamental human needs include purpose and connection. Numerous studies confirm that regular volunteering leads to higher levels of mental well-being over time, offering a sustainable path to improved mental health and wellness.
At Equality Virginia, we prioritize the well-being of our community. Taking time to uplift others can be a transformative experience for everyone involved.
We invite you to explore and, if you’re feeling up for it, sign up for upcoming volunteer opportunities in 2024. Whether that’s doing community outreach and tabling with Equality Virginia at Pride events, getting dressed up and helping at our annual LGBTQ+ gala the Commonwealth Dinner, or supporting our annual programming like the Transgender Information and Empowerment Summit (TIES) or Lobby Days– there’s a spot for you at Equality Virginia. Together, we can build a stronger sense of community and belonging through our collective efforts.
