ACLU Supporter, as we get through this dark period of history together, I want to share with you something that gives me hope: We've dramatically reduced the potential of COVID-19 to spread by winning the release of more than 9,000 people from overcrowded prisons and jails – all because of our collective action. We are placing enormous pressure on police, governors, prosecutors, sheriffs, and the Trump administration by elevating the threat that mass incarceration poses to containing this pandemic. And they're beginning to pay attention.
Yesterday, we filed a lawsuit against the Department of Justice to immediately release 700+ people who are most at risk of serious illness or death in a Louisiana federal prison, one of the hardest hit areas. We're planning to file lawsuits in Maryland, Texas, Arizona, and Connecticut, too. But these wins don't just come from what happens in the courts. Public opinion matters in pressuring public officials, shaping the outcome of lawsuits, and stopping the spread of this virus. There's hope in this darkness, ACLU Supporter. Don't forget that. Thanks for taking action, Udi Ofer P.S. Already signed the petition? Thank you! Take the next step by sharing this link to the petition with your friends. |
