Hey Everyone!
As we welcome May (and hopefully better weather), I wanted to take a moment and share what I’ve been up to in Council over the past few months!
I’m proud to fulfill my promise to hold our government accountable and find solutions to make our city work for you. Here are a few of the initiatives my team and I have been working on:
Eviction Diversion Program – Last month, I was thrilled to co-introduce the Eviction Diversion Bill. [[link removed]] The Eviction Diversion program has become a national model that has helped thousands of low-income renters stay in their homes, provide resources for tenants and landlords, and reduce eviction filings. As a former housing attorney who has spent my career working for housing justice, I couldn’t be more excited at the prospect of EDP becoming permanent in Philadelphia.
Tax Preparation Transparency Bill – There are 240,000 Philadelphians eligible for free tax preparation services, but only 25% of them take advantage of it, leaving millions of dollars on the table that could be in the pockets of Philadelphians. I proposed a bill [[link removed]] that would require commercial tax preparers to disclose fees and promote free alternative options to potential customers – potentially allowing an estimated $64 million to be returned to low-income Philadelphians.

Restoring Outdoor Dining – We held a hearing on Outdoor Dining and it’s clear from the testimony we heard that the current process to approve outdoor dining is not working for everyone [[link removed]] . Outdoor dining enlivens our streets, creates accessible dining options throughout the City and can be a lifeline for small businesses. I am working with small businesses, the Administration, my City Council colleagues and community stakeholders to find a path forward that improves the law and the process to bring our vibrant, diverse food scene back to the streets of Philadelphia.
Beyond my legislative work, I was also proud to be a part of these events:
Vision Zero 2024 Conference - I participated in the Bicycle Coalition of Philadelphia’s panel focused on SEPTA funding, as part of their Vision Zero 2024 Conference. SEPTA is the least expensive, oftentimes most efficient and greenest way to get around but it is not accessible enough. I loved hearing more broadly about Vision Zero’s goals, safe streets, bicycle safety, and more.
Trans Day of Visibility - We raised the flag for Trans Day of Visibility on March 31st, honoring the achievements and contributions of Transgender people in Philadelphia and all around the world.
[[link removed]]
Celebrated Women’s History Month - I was proud to speak at Accenture’s International Women’s Day event, highlighting the importance of women and diverse leaders in STEM and other professions.
I’m grateful to be directly impacting our city in this new role, and excited to see what else we can accomplish throughout the next couple of months as we complete the Budget process (more on that soon!).
My work in City Council would not be possible without your past, present, and future support – thank you!
In service,
Rue Landau
