Everything you need to know about the elections on 2 May
This Thursday, 2 May, you will get the chance to vote for the first ever Mayor for the East Midlands Combined County Authority and the next Police and Crime Commissioner when elections take place.
Nottingham City Council, Derbyshire County Council, Derby City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council have opened the door to a massive £4billion investment in transport, skills, housing and the environment after securing a deal for a new East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA), which will be led by a Mayor, similar to areas like the West Midlands, Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire.
The East Midlands deal is one of the biggest so far, and the Mayor will have powers and resources currently held by Westminster. The EMCCA is being funded by government and will not take money away from existing council budgets.
Residents will also be able to vote for who should be their Police and Crime Commissioner next Thursday. The commissioner is responsible for policing across the county, ensuring the delivery of an effective and efficient police service.

Postal voting
You must return your postal vote, so it reaches your Local Returning Officer by *10pm* on *Thursday 2 May*. If you miss the post, you can hand it into your local council offices during office hours to a person authorised to receive postal votes, or at a polling station in your local council area before *10pm* on *Thursday 2 May 2024.*
"You can only hand in your own postal pack and postal packs for up to five other electors. If you hand in any more than that, only your own will be accepted. When handing in any pack(s), you will also be required to complete a form"*.*

Information on voter ID
You now need to show photographic ID when voting in person at a polling station. Here are some FAQs to help you make sure you are using the right ID when voting.
*Can I use an expired document as ID?*
Expired photo ID documents can be used as long as the photograph still looks like you.
*Can I bring a photo or a copy of my ID?*
No, only original documents can be accepted.
*Can I use photo ID with a different name (e.g. because I’ve got married or changed my name)?*
No, the name on your ID must be the same name you used to register to vote, unless you bring additional original evidence to support the change e.g. marriage certificate or change of name deed.
*How do I know what is an accepted form of photo ID?*

Voting at a polling station
Your polling card will have information about voting and your polling station. Make sure you check the details as your polling station may have changed. You can also find your polling station by visiting: www.wheredoivote.co.uk [ [link removed] ]
On Thursday 2 May 2024, polling stations will be open from 7am until 10pm. *Remember to bring your photo ID with you*. When you arrive, staff will ask for your name and address, check the electoral register and your photo ID, and, if accepted, issue you two ballot papers:
* Combined County Authority Mayoral
* Police and Crime Commissioner
You have ONE vote on each of your ballot papers
*How to fill out your ballot papers*
* Read both ballot papers and instructions at the top carefully
* Decide who you want to vote for
* Vote for your chosen candidate by putting an X in the box to the right of their name
* Once done, fold the papers, return to the desk, and place each paper in the appropriate ballot box.
Do not put your paper(s) in the ballot box if you make a mistake, just ask the staff and they will be able to advise you and re-issue your paper(s), if necessary
The East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) Mayoral Election and the Police & Crime Commissioner Election are both first-past-the-post, so you will have ONE vote on each of the ballot papers and the candidate who gets the highest number of votes will be declared the winner
