Campaigns don’t usually do this- but this isn’t a usual situation. Today, I’m not asking you to support our campaign. If you can, and only if you can, I’m asking you to consider a local charity. Horizons is providing Meals on Wheels service to Iowans. But they’re facing unprecedented demand and need more resources than ever before, and we can do something about it.

Hi team,

We’re all aware of the ongoing crisis in the United States. We’ve been directed by medical professionals and scientists to wash our hands often and physically distance to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 -- easing the burden on our doctors, nurses, and first responders.

Seniors in particular have been strongly encouraged to drastically limit their interactions, but they still need to eat.

The Meals on Wheels program is bringing food to seniors to protect them from infection by limiting their need to go out in public. With increased demand and need for meals, we need to make sure they have the resources to help all of our friends and neighbors.

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to get out and help deliver meals to local seniors with Horizon’s Meals on Wheels program, and it was one of my favorite days. It wasn’t just about the food, but about the personal connections that are made between the seniors and the volunteers who deliver the meals.

This moment is particularly hard for seniors, because their health and safety depend on distancing from others. It’s tough, but we can make it a little easier by supporting programs like Meals on Wheels.

I’ve always been proud to support funding for Meals on Wheels at the federal level. During this difficult time, in order to meet the enormous demand for their services, Horizons has gone above and beyond to serve our community. And we must make sure they have the resources to continue to provide these unprecedented services.

Our campaign is pausing our fundraising efforts and asking you to help support the expanded efforts of our local Meals on Wheels program. These are our friends and neighbors, and they need our help to get through this difficult time.

Please, help Iowans in need by clicking here and making whatever donation you can, if and only if you can.

In Iowa, if you’re a senior or you know a senior who needs assistance, you can call Lifelong Links at 1-866-468-7887 and you’ll be connected with a provider in your area.

It’s hard to overstate the severity of this crisis, but if we take action now, we can reduce its impact and save the lives of so many of our neighbors.

I hope you’ll join me.

Thank you,

Abby Finkenauer
