Hi there,

An alarming report on the current state of maternal care in Louisiana was just published, and we wanted to fill you in.

The article states that in the aftermath of the state’s abortion ban, pregnant women have been given “risky, unnecessary surgeries, denied swift treatment for miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies, and forced to wait until their life is at risk before getting an abortion.”

They found that doctors were using “extreme caution,” leading to unnecessary deaths in pregnant women. This is because, under the new law, doctors would face penalties of up to 15 years in prison and $200,000 in fines for performing an abortion.

Before we summarize their findings, we need your help to fight back. Our 2024 game plan is to support women candidates running in the states with abortion bans, where women are in the most desperate need of representation. Louisiana is our next target.

We are sick and tired of men making laws about OUR bodies. We want to set up shop in Louisiana to make sure these anti-choice, dangerous men have strong, pro-choice FEMALE opponents. It will cost us approximately $10,000 to get a chapter of our organization off the ground in Louisiana. Can you help us get there by donating today?

Here’s what women in Louisiana are going through:

❌ Denying care to seriously ill patients until their lives are “irrefutably” at risk: Doctors a
re delaying lifesaving treatments to avoid breaking the law, even in cases in which the pregnancy is not viable and is deadly to the mother. “One patient with an ectopic pregnancy said her care was delayed so long that her fallopian tubes ruptured.”

❌ Unnecessary C-sections: The report found that when a patient’s water broke before the fetus was viable, they would receive unnecessary C-sections to empty their uterus instead of receiving a sometimes medically necessary abortion procedure or medication. As detailed in the article, when compared to an abortion under these circumstances, C-sections carry “far greater risks for increased hemorrhaging, compromised future fertility, and other complications.”

Modern medicine has found ways to ensure women do not need to endure this. We are failing these women.

❌ Delaying prenatal care into the second trimester: OB-GYNs are delaying routine prenatal care until at least 12 weeks of pregnancy. This delay can be dangerous for women who may have complications, such as blood clots or an undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy. “Without treatment, some pregnancy-related problems can lead to birth defects, stroke, heart attack, or even death.”
Here’s the thing: People's lives are at severe risk because of the Louisiana abortion ban, and this is especially true for Black and low-income women. According to NPR, Louisiana has some of the HIGHEST rates of maternal mortality and morbidity in the nation, and Black women are 2X as likely to die compared to white women.

Women in red states are being left behind. We’ve conducted a deep analysis of the political landscape in many of the states with abortion bans and found that if we direct more resources into helping pro-choice women get elected in red states, it is possible to get these laws changed.

If this report made you angry, we want you to join our efforts to chip away at the male majorities in the states where abortion bans have been written. We need to hear more women’s voices in the rooms where decisions about our bodies are being made. Help us reach our goal of raising $10,000 so we can launch a chapter of our PAC in Louisiana by pitching in $20.24 or more today.
