Dear John,

The protest encampments sweeping college campuses of elite universities is unsettling for a number of reasons. Our First Amendment Right to assemble and protest is engrained in the identity of who we are as a nation. But where do you draw the line?

When protests become combative or destroy property - can one still fall back on their First Amendment Right as a means of avoiding arrest and prosecution? Who is protecting those outside the protest?

The lack of universities' decisive action when the protesters are fighting law enforcement and breaking into buildings will have long-term repercussions. By not drawing a line in the sand, the university has already begun to feel the effects through loss of donors and employers not hiring their graduates. The reputations of these universities will be tainted, and enrollments may drop. In 1970, several students died in a war protest on the campus of Kent State University in Ohio. While the circumstances were different, the end result is that many colleges and universities closed, according to the Kent State University website.

We all have the Right to protest - no question. However, no one has the Right to destroy property or endanger others.
