Friend,
BREAKING NEWS: The U.S. Department of Agriculture finalized a rule to finally end the cruel act of soring once and for all! The finalized rule bans the many cruel devices and substances integral to soring, including heavy, tall, high-heel-like horseshoes and chains that bang against a horse’s chemically sored ankles, all used to cause excruciating pain. It also ends the failed system of industry self-policing, which has allowed this cruel practice to persist for so long.
The Humane Society Legislative Fund has been fighting for decades to truly rid the industry of this brutality, so this rule is historic. But we could not have done any of this without your support. We called on you time and time again to urge the USDA to finalize this rule, and you did just that. I hope you take as much pride in this win as I do, because we could not have done it without you.
But this is only one (very big) win, and our fight to protect all horses from cruelty and abuse continues—and they need your help. Our April fundraising deadline is hours away, and we must hit our $50,000 goal to continue our urgent work to protect all animals from cruelty and abuse. Will you make a gift of $20 or more to HSLF now, before tonight’s MIDNIGHT deadline, so we can protect horses and all vulnerable animals from abuse?

Although we will take a minute to savor our victory over the sorers, there are still many out there harming horses, the worst of all being the slaughter industry. Those in the horse slaughter industry go to great lengths to push horses into the slaughter pipeline. Known as “kill buyers,” they use big budgets and trickery to take horses away from legitimate owners. They sometimes even block rescue organizations from giving horses a second chance at life. Worse, kill buyers have been known to impersonate rescue advocates and deceive loving horse owners into giving up their animals only for them to be sent to slaughter!
With the Triple Crown about to start, bringing the public’s attention to the horses competing, we want to make sure the public also knows about the uglier side of businesses that rely on horses—making our work to pass lifesaving protections for these majestic animals even more urgent. We won’t stand aside while exploitive interests harm horses for entertainment or money. But we’re counting on your help.
We know it’s heartbreaking for animal advocates like you to hear about these awful practices. But with your support, we can finally shut down the horse slaughter industry by passing the Save America’s Forgotten Equines (SAFE) Act. You helped us take on the sorers, no reason we can’t end the slaughter industry as well.
So please, before 11:59 p.m. tonight, make your lifesaving gift to HSLF to help protect the vulnerable animals that need us.
