The Fight Against Child Marriage in Ethiopia
In rural parts of Ethiopia, young girls still face the risk of being kidnapped and forced into early marriages — stripping them of their childhood, their well-being and future opportunities as young women. Zemzem, a 13-year-old girl in Ethiopia, shares her story of how members of a local UNICEF-supported youth group rescued her from one such abduction. Now, Zemzem hopes to finish her education and become a teacher, and UNICEF continues to support programs to help raise awareness of the consequences of child marriage and empower communities to help protect children’s futures.

Protecting Children from Landmines in Ukraine
After more than two years of war in Ukraine, an estimated one-third of the country is littered with landmines and explosives — hidden in rivers, fields, hospitals, playgrounds and even children’s toys. As the conflict continues, more and more children are affected by the impacts of war, with 124 civilian casualties in the last two years. As part of ongoing emergency response, UNICEF and partners are working to provide education programs in the fundamentals of landmine safety, to bring critical knowledge to children and families.
