To our extended CZI family:

In light of these challenging times, we want to share with you some of the encouraging work of our partners and grantees. Across the globe, we’re seeing them step up in countless ways — from scientists and researchers who are fighting the spread of the virus, to frontline community health providers, to organizations who are working with vulnerable populations, to education leaders helping families and students navigate remote learning. The path forward will be difficult but collectively we can do our part to not only stem the spread of COVID-19, but ensure there’s a better future for everyone on the other side.

From everyone at CZI, we are sending best wishes for the health of your family, colleagues and community.

SCIENCE

* CZI committed $25 million to the COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator — a global effort announced earlier this month by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Wellcome, and Mastercard to help speed the development of treatments for COVID-19. Other donors include the U.K. Government and the artist and philanthropist Madonna. Learn more about the Accelerator ([link removed]).
* CZI, the Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, and the University of California, San Francisco are teaming up to increase Bay Area testing ([link removed]) for COVID-19.
* As part of a White House Office of Science and Technology Policy project, engineers at CZI helped launch a machine-readable dataset on COVID-19 research, so scientists can more quickly analyze knowledge around prevention, treatment and a vaccine ([link removed]).
* Researchers using the tech tool IDseq in Cambodia confirmed the country’s first COVID-19 case in days, instead of weeks — rapidly accelerating the timeline to share critical data. Read the full story on WIRED ([link removed]).

EDUCATION

* Given the unprecedented impact of COVID-19 on our education system, CZI is committing more than $1 million to ensure teachers and families have the resources they need to support student learning at home ([link removed]).

JUSTICE & OPPORTUNITY

* COVID-19 threatens the health and safety of people incarcerated in jails and prison, as well as correctional staff. That’s why many CZI grantees, including The Justice Collaborative ([link removed]) and FWD.us ([link removed]), are mobilizing to reduce prison and jail populations amid the pandemic.

COMMUNITY

* CZI is committing an initial $5 million to support Bay Area COVID-19 emergency relief efforts ([link removed]), funding local organizations and agencies responding to the pandemic. From expanding COVID-19 testing, to enabling at-home learning, and investing in programs that assist individuals and families who are financially impacted, CZI’s regional response focuses on supporting communities most affected by the pandemic. We’ve also compiled education resources ([link removed]) for remote learning and tech resources ([link removed]) to help your organization support a remote workforce.
