Daily Docket — Monday, April 29

Here are some updates from the U.S. Supreme Court.

  • Pennsylvania Republicans asked the Supreme Court to hear their case invoking the rejected independent state legislature theory to challenge President Joe Biden's 2021 executive order expanding voter registration.

  • The Court scheduled its next opinion day for May 9. The nation’s high court still needs to issue a decision on South Carolina's congressional map, plus former President Donald Trump's immunity claims.

Here are some other updates from today.

  • A New York appellate court heard oral argument in a Republican challenge to the state’s new no-excuse mail-in voting law, the New York Early Mail Voter Act.

    • A trial court dismissed the lawsuit in February after finding that Republicans failed to prove that the law is unconstitutional. Republicans quickly appealed that decision to an appellate court, which will determine if the case can continue.

  • Six Republican-led counties in New York sued the state over a new law that moves most local elections to even-numbered years to align with federal elections. State officials say the change is needed to fight voter fatigue and boost turnout.
