Dear Neighbors,

As we enter the final stretch of the 2024 legislative session, I'm proud of the progress we've made together, building a stronger Minnesota for working families. We're committed to securing fair wages, affordable healthcare, and investments that empower our communities.??

Keeping you informed: Here are some recent developments from the capital.

Floor Action

Last year, we passed my legislation to legalize adult-use cannabis, along with the possession and growing of cannabis plants for personal, recreational use. However, buying cannabis legally at a licensed retail business in the state is not set to begin until early next year. The Cannabis Policy bill we passed last week is meant to expedite the process of setting up a good, legitimate marketplace for cannabis to displace that illicit marketplace that?s in place currently. You can read more about what the bill contains here [ [link removed] ].?

We also passed a strong Tenants? Rights Policy Bill, which includes provisions to safeguard tenants? right to organize, protect tenant survivors of domestic violence, clarify tenants? rights to emergency services, prohibit rental discrimination based on public assistance, and more. More details in the bill are included here [ [link removed] ].?

Join a State Board, Council, or Committee

The Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State recently released a notice of vacancies for various state boards, councils and committees that are accepting applications. Any Minnesotans interested in public service are encouraged to apply! There are positions for people from all backgrounds and professions, from cosmetologists to engineers.??

You can find the full list of vacancies here [ [link removed] ].??

Mississippi River Sampling

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency samples Minnesota?s major rivers (Red, Rainy, Minnesota, Mississippi, and St. Croix) on a five-year rotation, and this year marks the first time they will be sampling the entire length of the Mississippi from the headwaters to the Iowa border.?

There are around 50 sampling sites which include water chemistry (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia-nitrogen, sulfate, chloride, hardness,and more). There will also be testing for PFAS in fish as part of this effort.

Initial sampling will take place between May and September this year, the two sites closest to Anoka and Coon Rapids are:

* A biological station upstream of I-169, in Anoka/Champlin
* Mississippi River at US Hwy 169 at Champlin, monitored by Met Council
* The nearest PFAS stations are upstream and downstream of that area.???

Expanding Insurance to Cover Prosthetics & Wigs?

DFLers are laser-focused on ensuring all Minnesotans can work, go to school, run errands and afford their lives with dignity. Two bills that are advancing would require insurance companies to cover the costs of wigs for people undergoing cancer treatment, and the costs for prosthetics for those who need them. As families work through a new transition in their lives or navigate a new diagnosis or health challenge, the last thing they should have to worry about is their financial security. These are common sense proposals I support, and will advocate for as we continue to pass legislation that puts Minnesotans first.?
