At Progressive Maryland, we're channeling the spirit of May Day as we gear up for an action-packed month ahead. With numerous issue campaigns and fresh initiatives underway, we're excited to continue organizing and building power for all Marylanders. And as we prep for the upcoming primary elections, your support is crucial. Healthcare Justice:Showing Up to Demand An End to Insurance Denials - Join Us For May Events!

This Wednesday, May 1st, our Care Over Cost Campaign will attend the Senate Finance Committee Hearing to watch Unitedhealth Group CEO “Sir” Andrew Witty testify about the data breach that happened on his watch and harmed thousands of patients and providers. We’ll be there to support champions like Sen. Elizabeth Warren and the questions she’ll put to him and to demand that this giant, wealthy corporation stop denying our care!

On Thursday, May 30th, Progressive Maryland along with Public Citizen will co-host a statewide virtual forum with Rep.Kwesi Mfume! Congressman Mfume will discuss his support of Medicare For All and we’ll urge him to address the crisis in insurance claim denials and the other problems Marylanders are facing when it comes to getting care.

We’ll be busy doing outreach and education all month! You can be part of the power building team by volunteering with us. It’s fun and we provide support and training. We’ll be door knocking, phone banking, and going to community events all month. Phone banking shifts are Tuesdays at 5:30. Door knocking shifts are the weekend of May 18th and 19th. You can also contact Patty if you have a community event you think we should attend or organize about our healthcare work.

May Day: Picket at National Harbor with IUOE Local 99

Wednesday, May 1 — 6:00-7:30 PM

International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 99 workers at The Wyndham National Harbor deserve fair treatment and on May Day they're taking that message to the streets. Join IUOE Local 99 members for a picket at National Harbor from 6:00-7:30 PM. RSVP to Eamon Clifford.

May Day: Wreath Laying Ceremony at the historic Mother Jones Historic Marker

On May Day, join the Labor Heritage Foundation to lay a wreath at the Mother Jones Historic Marker at Powder Mill Road & Riggs Road (near the Hillandale Baptist Church at 2601 Powder Mill Road) in Adelphi, MD.

News You Can Use: Bills keep hitting the Gov.'s desk. How many will he sign? The watch party is scheduled

We had years of Larry Hogan's ambushes -- waiting till the last minute to veto bills from his very Dem General Assembly, giving them minimum opportunity to override until the following year's sessions. We are getting used, now, to a Governor and Assembly that are much more in sync. Wes Moore has (as you see below) rumbled through a big bunch of bills with a fast pen. What it will take to make him down-check a bill is not emerging in a hurry. He has embraced his housing package. Bills are on the way to him -- or have already been signed -- that may have some unpleasant aspects (like the refusal to take the "renewable" label off the choke-inducing Baltimore trash incinerator, or the last-minute sabotage of more general building requirements that would reduce the carbon hit from new buildings). Then there's the youth crime bill with all the panicky responses to carjacking. We'll wait and see if remedies are proposed. Meanwhile, check out what's getting signed, what other states are doing better (or worse) than we are in Maryland, and keep up with the Feds with People's Action reporting and analysis.
