REMAKING THE ECONOMY IN FRESNO: COMMUNITY IN THE TIME OF COVID

When thinking of California, Fresno is rarely front of mind. But Fresno County, home to over 940,000 people and a national agricultural leader, is central to the US economy. Still, amidst the fertile Central Valley soil is tremendous racial and economic inequality ([link removed] ) in the majority people-of-color city. Fresno residents are working to change that. Recently, Fresno allocated $66 million ([link removed] ) in capital investment through participatory budgeting, the largest use of that process in US history.

As is true everywhere, the current pandemic has upended the Fresno community. On our webinar, webinar participants will discuss both the effects of the pandemic today, as well as how to advance a more equitable, post-pandemic Fresno future.

We begin our visit to Fresno with an interview of Sabina Gonzalez-Eraña ([link removed] ) , program manager of Central/West Fresno City, for The California Endowment ([link removed] ) . We then turn to three distinguished individuals, who will talk about their work before, during, and what they envision after our current global health emergency.

- Veronica Garibay ([link removed] ) is cofounder and codirector of the Leadership Council for Justice & Accountability ([link removed] ) and a leading advocate for disadvantaged Fresno neighborhoods.
- Tara Lynn Gray ([link removed] ) is CEO of the Fresno Metro Black Chamber of Commerce, ([link removed] ) where she seeks to support racial equity by building supports for black-owned businesses.
- Kiel Lopez Schmidt ([link removed] ) is Development Manager at UpHoldings ([link removed] ) , a Central Valley affordable housing developer.
