Hi John, I’m Ashley Walker. I’m a Senior Advisor here at the Florida Women’s Freedom Coalition, and I’d like to tell you my story.
I went through several cycles of IVF in order to eventually have my son. After one cycle, I was about 7 weeks along and something went terribly wrong.
My very wanted pregnancy was ectopic, meaning the embryo had implanted in one of my fallopian tubes rather than my uterus. I had to undergo emergency surgery, removing both the non-viable pregnancy and my fallopian tube.
All of this happened before Roe v. Wade was overturned, so I was able to get the life-saving care that I needed. For women in Florida, this same care is available to them if they need it - but only for the next 24 hours.
Because when the clock strikes midnight on May 1, Florida’s six week abortion ban goes into effect. Women facing life-threatening pregnancy complications like mine will no longer be guaranteed care. They will be forced by the government to take their chances at the nearest emergency room, hoping that they’ll luck out and come across a doctor willing to save their lives.
The horror is unimaginable, and it doesn’t need to be this way. Will you chip in before our end of month fundraising deadline to help us get Amendment 4 passed this November and enshrine abortion rights in the Florida constitution?
