2024 Earthday Sea Shepherd Show
Earlier this week, the Sea Shepherd Show did a deep dive on our #StopTheGrind campaign in the Faroe Islands north of Scotland. Here’s what happens in a Grind; a pod of whales or dolphins are spotted then herded into a cove by jet skis and motor boats. Residents of that community wait for them in shallow water, hook them through their blowholes, then drag the whale or dolphin closer to shore and slaughter them. Faroese public health authorities strongly advise against consumption of the meat from this hunt due to contaminants in the flesh, revealing this as a barbaric echo from past centuries that needs to be stopped. Sea Shepherd crew members Sara and Celia joined us live from the Faroes, then #StopTheGrind campaign leader Valentina shared her vision for 2024 and how we can work together to end this cruel tradition. Sign up at stopthegrind.org, check out the recording of the show, and get involved to help us protect these animals!

Vaquita Survey in May
April 17, 2024, Sea Shepherd announced that the 2024 Vaquita Survey will begin May 5th and conclude on May 26th. The independent scientific survey estimates the population of the Vaquita Porpoise in the UNESCO-recognized Vaquita Refuge, and a recording of the press conference with our Mexican government partners can be found HERE. The 2024 Vaquita Survey will examine the endemic species that exists only in a small region of Mexico’s Upper Gulf of California. A partnership between Sea Shepherd and the Natural Protected Areas Commission of Mexico (CONANP), the survey will be conducted by more than a dozen highly trained and experienced observers and led by Dr. Barbara Taylor, who has more than 30 years of experience in protecting the Vaquita. The survey will locate and track Vaquitas from two ships with logistical support provided by the Mexican Navy. Look for results in early June!

Progress in the Gulf of Ulloa
In January we announced the formation of a new campaign to protect biodiversity in the Gulf of Ulloa. An incredibly important step when building a campaign is learning as much as you can about the area, the communities, the traditions, the migratory patterns and so much more. That’s exactly what our team is doing with this new challenge to protect leatherback turtles. We are reaching out to a broad spectrum of stakeholders in the area and making sure we listen and learn so our campaign is fully informed and ready for success. Details coming soon!
As always, these entirely donation-driven efforts and others, like our long-running whale campaigns in Guadalupe Island and the Revillagigedo Archipelago or our work to protect the Krill in Antarctica, are only possible because of supporters like you. Visit HERE to see all the ways you can support our captains and crews out at sea protecting endangered marine wildlife.
