Dear John,
I look forward to May every year. From bringing in fresh blooms to brighten my house for May Day, to seeing the first bumblebees of the season (though hopefully not in the fresh blooms!), May brings cheerfulness to the end of spring in Maine. Our backyards begin to hum with life, and the change from spring to summer begins.
While you're not out enjoying all of the wonders late spring in Maine has to offer, I hope you'll consider joining us for a Lunch & Learn! We'll hear from Maine business leaders about how they're managing the climate crisis, learn about the processes that go into permitting the clean-energy transition, and get insight from a wildlife expert who will teach us how to manage the invasive plants in our backyards sustainably.
See you online!
— Kathleen

Friday, May 3, 12-1 PM: Business Engagement, Climate Change, & Maine’s Economy
Businesses of all sizes and types realize that climate change is having (and will have) a greater impact on our economy than anything we’ve experienced before, and that they must adapt and change how they operate to thrive in the future. Some are reinventing their existing companies, others are starting new ones, designing and building the products and services that a carbon-constrained economy will need – and many want to help each other learn and grow.
Join us for a moderated panel discussion with ClimateWork Maine Executive Director Jeff Marks. Jeff will facilitate a conversation with Maine Renewable Energy Association Executive Director Eliza Donoghue and Aaron Frederick, Ecosystem & Strategic Engagement Consultant, Northeast Clean Energy Council, on how they are working with businesses on climate economic upheaval head-on to turn challenges into opportunities.

Friday, May 10, 12-1 PM: Permitting the Clean Energy Future
To reach necessary emissions reduction targets, the United States will have to quickly build a vast amount of clean energy infrastructure, from renewable energy generation to long-distance transmission lines and electric grid expansion. Climate advocates often focus on what we need to build, but ambitious procurement targets for wind, solar, and storage are just the beginning. Where and how we build is governed by a multi-layered system of local, state, and federal permits evaluated and issued (or denied) by a number of different agencies. Learn more about these intersecting processes from Rob Wood, Director of Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Land Resources; Sarah Haggerty, Conservation Biologist and GIS Manager at Maine Audubon; and Sean Mahoney, Executive Vice President at Conservation Law Foundation.

Friday, May 31, 12-1 PM: Rewilding Invasive Species
Invasive species are organisms that are not native to a particular environment. They are often unintentionally introduced through human activities such as trade, travel, and agriculture and reproduce quickly, outcompeting native species. Invasive species can significantly harm ecosystems by disrupting the balance of native flora and fauna, potentially leading to biodiversity loss and habitat degradation. Thus, managing them is vital to preserving biodiversity and ecosystem health.
Join Zack Rouda, Director and Instructor at Rewild Maine , to learn how to manage invasive species sustainably. Zack will teach us to effectively identify and manage the invasive species we see in our backyards without using harmful chemical herbicides. We’ll also explore non-traditional solutions, including using invasive species for food and craft materials.
