This can’t
wait.
Further delays in decarcerating our jails and prisons in the midst of the
COVID-19 crisis will be the difference between life and death.
Overcrowding and unsanitary conditions in our state and federal
facilities, and an uneven ability to provide critical medical care, have
long left those behind the wall especially vulnerable to infectious
diseases like COVID-19.

this administration to immediately pursue aggressive decarceration in our
federal prisons? COVID-19 shouldn’t be a death sentence for anyone behind
the wall.

Ayanna is calling on the occupant of the White House to:
- Maximize the use of his clemency power to commute the sentences of
elderly individuals who do not pose a current and substantial safety risk.
- Maximize the use of his clemency power to commute the sentences of
medically vulnerable individuals who do not pose a current and substantial
safety risk.
- Establish streamlined procedures to release individuals who have not
been convicted of any crimes and are awaiting trial in prison or jail, and
commute the sentences of individuals who have one year or less remaining
on their sentence, if these individuals do not pose a current and
substantial safety risk.

In Massachusetts, we’ve seen leadership from leaders like Suffolk County
DA Rachael Rollins, who has fought to achieve decarceration at the state
and local level. We need our elected officials on the federal level to
follow suit.
