John,
The Great Barrier Reef may be suffering the most severe mass coral bleaching event on record.
Last week, aerial surveys of more than 1,000 individual reefs revealed that more than half of this coral has high or very high levels of bleaching. The extent of this bleaching reaches depths of up to 18 meters below the surface.
Coral experts are calling for immediate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to save this wonder of the natural world. Can you donate now to support SEEC Members who are fighting for this crucial legislation to protect the Great Barrier Reef? [[link removed]]

PROTECT OUR CORAL REEFS » [[link removed]]Coral bleaching occurs when the coral becomes stressed due to rising sea temperatures. The coral ejects tiny marine algae, known as zooxanthellae. With the zooxanthellae gone, the coral starves itself and its bone-white calcium skeleton becomes visible.
If high temperatures persist, the coral starts to die. And to make matters worse, sea surface temperatures have been between 0.5C and 1.5C hotter than expected for this time of year.
This discovery marks the fifth mass bleaching event in eight years. Without the crucial work of SEEC Members, these bleaching trends will continue, with a devastating impact on our oceans.
Please, will you chip in now to support SEEC Members in Congress who are leading the charge to implement policies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, curb rising sea temperatures, and protect vulnerable ecosystems like the Great Barrier Reef? [[link removed]]
