Hi John –

This week's showdown between students and three ultra-conservative school board members in the Anoka-Hennepin School District showed just how powerful collective action can be.

After the conservative board members announced their plans to hold the budget hostage to roll back protections for LGBTQ+ and students of color, the students organized and protested the next board meeting.

And it worked. One of the far-right board members backed down.

Many of the targeted programs came about as the results of multiple lawsuits against the school district over their indifference toward bullying and discrimination in their schools.

Part of the solution was affinity groups for students, allowing them to feel a sense of belonging and take action together. And they worked just as intended this week.

I'm so proud of these students for making their voices heard and fighting back. They are truly amazing and I look forward to watching them grow as leaders in our community!

But students shouldn't have to fight for basic rights and respect. That's why I'm a big supporter of the School Board Integrity Project. They're working to train and elect progressive school board members across our state to prevent things like this from ever happening.

Please join me today in making a contribution to the School Board Integrity Project to help them fight back!

Thank you,

Julie
