There’s so much we don’t know about how the world will look ten years from now, 50 years from now, 100 years from now. But here’s what we know without question.
The number of people willing to acknowledge animal suffering is going to steadily grow. Over time–if we are persistent–the majority of people are going to understand that it doesn’t just harm nonhuman animals when their lives and habitats are destroyed. It harms us too.
These people will include judges and elected officials: those with the power to reject nonhuman animals’ de facto legal status as “things” and transform them into rights-holders. They too will recognize that we can’t continue the way we have been. They too will say, as judges and elected officials have already said of the rightlessness of our clients, “This is wrong.”
A future where nonhuman rights are recognized and protected isn’t inevitable. We have to fight for it. That’s why the Nonhuman Rights Project exists.
Once again, thank you so much for reading this email series and for considering a donation to the NhRP–the only organization in the US dedicated solely to securing legal rights for nonhuman animals–for Earth Week 2024.
