Right now, in my last year in office, I want to look beyond the next 12 months and focus in on the challenges we as a nation will face in the years and decades ahead.

And Samuel, the progress we make in the next few years is wholly dependent on the choices we make now.

We've got to reaffirm our values and commitments and hold them against a hard reality -- a reality where we have done so much good, but we still see parents struggling to balance doing their jobs and taking care of their families, students being saddled with crippling debt, and women earning less than men in the workplace -- and see how we're measuring up to the legacy of our forebears and the promise of future generations. And when we do that, we'll see that we've come so far, but we've got so much work left to do together.

I want to treat my last year in office just like my first, Samuel, because we're just as hungry for change now as we were seven years ago -- and the truth is, we've got just as much work to do on all the things that matter to hardworking families.
