John,
Since June 2023, workers’ wage increases have been outpacing inflation. It’s a huge win, but it hasn’t been enough. The wage boosts workers received have been modest, and with rising costs, they’re still struggling to pay for basic essentials.
Greedy corporations have found a new tactic — though many still set insane prices and engage in blatant price gouging, they’ve started using “shrinkflation,” meaning they shrink the size of their products and services but charge the same price as before.
Add your name to our new petition and urge your members of Congress to pass the Shrinkflation Prevention Act now.
Here’s some hard proof: Paper towels and toilet paper are now, on average, 34.9% more expensive than they were in January 2019 — and 10.3% of that increase is due to corporations shrinking the size of paper rolls and packages. This means corporate profits are at an all-time high. Between July 2020 and July 2022, inflation rose by 14%, and corporate profits increased by a staggering 74%.
Congress has introduced a plan to protect consumers from this deception. The Shrinkflation Prevention Act, introduced by Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bob Casey and by Representatives Chris Deluzio and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez.
The Shrinkflation Prevention Act would require the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) create regulations to protect against “shrinkflation,” and designate it as an unfair or deceptive practice. The Act would also bar manufacturers from using “shrinkflation” to increase their profits and authorize the FTC and state authorities to bring civil actions against corporations.
It’s time for Congress to take action to stop corporations from taking advantage of the American people with sneaky practices and price gouging.
Add your name now to call on your members of Congress: pass the Shrinkflation Prevention Act now!
Thank you for taking action with us,
