People are losing their jobs, their loved ones, and their lives. But instead of getting help to people who need it, last week Trump met with oil and gas CEOs in the White House to plot about how to protect their profits.

This is shameful. With your help, we won’t let them get away with sneaking through handouts to the fossil fuel industry under the guise of a national emergency.

Friends of the Earth is working round-the-clock to stay ahead of and push back on Big Polluters’ outrageous schemes. Last week, as soon as we found out about a potential royalty relief package that would make dangerous offshore drilling cheaper, we spread the word to the media and rushed messages to Congress.

Together, we successfully removed a $3 billion gift to Big Oil from the recent emergency spending bill in Congress. And we stopped the negligent cruise ship industry from being first in line for bailouts.

But the fight is still on to protect our air, lands and water -- which are under extra threat now that the country’s attention is on a public health crisis.

Trump’s EPA is trying to suspend its normal environmental enforcement, which means the administration is likely planning further cuts to essential environmental protections.

For example, Trump’s corrupt Interior Department -- in charge of protecting our public lands and national monuments -- is pushing through lease sales to enable more and more drilling, even though the public can’t participate in the process as usual.

More drilling in our public lands and waters means more climate disruption, more harm to wildlife, and the perilous possibility of oil spills.

It’s up to us to make sure that emergency responses protect the public, not polluting industries, from the health and economic impacts of the COVID-19 crisis.
