A toxic byproduct from rubber tires in urban watersheds kills up to 100% of coho salmon returning to spawn upstream – within hours. Earthjustice is fighting back.

All tires contain 6PPD and release a breakdown product known as 6PPD-quinone or “6PPD-Q,”, which washes into waterways during storms. 6PPD-Q is the second most toxic chemical to aquatic species ever evaluated, second only to the chemical war agent “parathion,” which has been banned across the globe due to its high toxicity.

Salmon and trout populations have declined dramatically and cannot recover if 6PPD-Q keeps poisoning their environment. Entire ecosystems and communities rely on these species for survival.

Earthjustice submitted a petition on behalf of the Yurok, Port Gamble S’Klallam, and Puyallup Tribes, urging the EPA to establish new regulations on 6PPD under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).

The TSCA requires the EPA to ban or regulate chemicals in commerce that pose unreasonable risks to human health or the environment. In November, the EPA granted the Tribes’ petition, agreeing that it must take action.

Earth Day was on Monday, April 22. This annual event was created to encourage protecting the environment, in part because our health is intertwined with our planet’s. Today, that truth is more apparent than ever as we fight against the disastrous results of climate change and biodiversity loss, and for the basic human right to clean air and water.
