Hey John,
Things have changed drastically and in ways we could not have foreseen in these last few weeks. Many people are stuck at home and beginning to feel anxious, lonely, and even depressed. We are doing online community check-ins and trainings to try to keep people engaged and feeling supported, but what else can we do in our personal lives to, well, keep it together? Gayle Paul is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in SF and a chapter member of DxE. She will be sharing some tips on how we can overcome our mental obstacles during this time. Join us at the Meetup: How to Keep it Together During Quarantine this` Saturday, April 11th, through this Zoom link https://zoom.us/j/176969886 and the Meeting ID: 176 969 886.
If you're interested in getting more involved in this active community, apply to become a chapter member at dxe.io/apply.
Here are the other events we have happening this week (all will be taking place online, unless otherwise noted). Action events are highlighted in blue and community events are highlighted in orange -- both are crucial to our movement!
- Tuesday, April 7th, 5 PM: Community Discussion on Spritual Growth - The times we are finding ourselves in seem unbelievable. We wake up with a sense of disbelief and questioning. People are ignoring calls to stop eating animals, sinophobia is prevalent even in the AR community and people are facing economic hardships. How we respond to situations like these can alleviate suffering rather than amplify it. All we ask for this discussion is to bring courage and love with you. Vulnerability will be supported and listened to. Raul will be facilitating the discussion and has considered himself a 'spiritual person' for a while. He grew up Catholic, before becoming secular and turning to studying Zen Buddhism for four years, two of which he lived under commuter "monkish" practice. - Wednesday, April 8th, 11 AM: Fighting For It: Change the Future or Die Trying (Online Workshop) - Our systems are horrific, but new ones can be built and your help is needed! Join this online workshop to learn ways you can help create a world where no one is deprived of their basic rights. Rose's Law: Animal Bill of Rights values the needs and rights of everyone on Earth and the planet itself, but it won't succeed without a fight. A nonviolent army is forming to bring the gears of injustice grinding to a halt. Together, we can create the future we all need, and it starts with you. RSVP now! https://zoom.us/j/858958227
- Friday, April 10th, 9:30 AM: Debate: Should the Animal Rights Movement Drop the Word "Vegan"? - A recent debate has been brewing within the animal liberation movement around the word "vegan." A growing number of activists are choosing to drop the label, but others think this is creating unnecessary division within the movement. Join this conversation to hear both sides of the debate and find out how we can bridge the gap between the two perspectives. The debate will be between David - @skinnyveganfitness - an animal rights videographer, photographer, content creator and public speaker and Orlando - @orlandoforfreedom - an animal rights organizer, strategist, and web developer with Direct Action Everywhere. Zoom link coming soon.
- Saturday, April 11th, 1 PM: Online Consent Training - Growing up, few of us ever receive proper sex education and even fewer learn about consent and healthy relationships. Respect and consent are crucial to our relationships as humans and even more important to our connections as activists. We strive to have a community in which people feel able to take action, that's why we have a Code of Conduct (dxe.io/conduct) that explains how we should treat one another. Kitty Jones will be leading this training, in which you will learn what consent is and how to maintain consent in all relationships. As well as what constitutes unacceptable behavior in DxE, how to report this, and the consequences of such behavior. Zoom meeting link coming soon!
- Monday, April 13th, 6 PM: Community Discussion on Nonviolence & Tone - DxE is a nonviolent group. We strive to be nonviolent in our actions, words and tone. Sometimes when we speak up against animal exploitation we show anger to address the system and show the urgency of the cause but even then, but we do not want to target individuals. Where is the line between violent and nonviolent tone? Join us in this important discussion about what it means to be nonviolent in action, word, and tone. Use Zoom Meeting link https://zoom.us/j/420267012 and Meeting ID: 420 267 012.
