What Sheena said that gives us hope.

Friend,

We wanted to share an email we got from a reader. She sent it a few years back, but it feels more relevant now than ever:

Hi Common Dreams,

Thank you so much for the wonderful job you do. My husband and I have donated several times since we signed up to get your emails in February. We want you to survive.

It's very distressing to hear how difficult it is for Common Dreams to raise funds. I was shocked that you have many hundreds of thousands of readers and yet just over 1,000 people usually donate.

Your fundraising emails are good, very heartfelt, and well-crafted. Please forgive me but I would like to suggest a different approach.

It is my story.

My name is Sheena. I love Common Dreams. I want it to survive.

I'm a recently retired college instructor who lives near Seattle. A week after the Inauguration, my husband and I were at a party, talking with friends about the dawning of the Age of Trump.

I told them I was very worried that the excitement and energy of the Women's March was going to crash and burn. The march had been so exhilarating and galvanizing -- I was thrilled. But what about the morning after? The week after? The months? "A march is not enough," I said.

"What is needed is action."

"No kidding!" said my dear friend Annie. "There IS action going on!" And she told me about Common Dreams.

I signed up to get the daily email from Common Dreams and fell completely in love. I saw articles and points of view that were never voiced in the mainstream media. I read news of grassroots activism and successes and of passionate people on fire to resist. I found the list of actions I could take every day to protest and make my voice heard. I was ecstatic!

Suddenly I was not alone. Others were also outraged. I was not crazy. Others also liked Bernie and universal health care and hated inequality. My actions were not futile. Others were also taking action as they could.

I instantly became part of the Common Dreams community and felt that together, we are powerful. Together we can effect change. Together we are a force with a passionately progressive vision. I am so grateful to Common Dreams, and for that, I am honored to support them.

Common Dreams is a hidden treasure and needs us to continue its good work. Think of everything it gives us in hope, compassion, and courage. Think of the loss we would feel without it. Please give what you can to keep Common Dreams alive.

This is the end of my story. Feel free to use it. Thank you Common Dreams. You are the best!

Thank you, Sheena!

Yesterday, Sheena donated to our current Spring Campaign, and her gift reminded us of her kind and inspiring letter from 2017. It seems like a long time ago, but we remember those dark days when hope was hard to find.

However, the readership of Common Dreams reminds us of the great people who keep us going and tell us our work means something to them. This is why we keep going, and only your support will allow us to continue. ([link removed])
