One year of war in Sudan
How a massive humanitarian crisis has unfolded over the past year in Sudan
|
This month marks one year since the war in Sudan broke out on April 15 last year. Since then, the fighting has wrought devastation across the country, leaving more than 15,000 people dead and forcing millions from their homes as the health care system has been driven to the point of collapse.
"When the war in Sudan exploded one year ago, it set off one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises," said Avril Benoît, executive director of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières in the United States (MSF) USA. "More than 8 million people have been uprooted from their homes, extreme violence against civilians is widespread, and malnutrition is at alarming levels."
Over the past year, our staff—the majority locally hired Sudanese professionals—have borne witness to the crisis, which is unfolding largely outside the world’s headlines while humanitarian aid falls far short of meeting the spiraling needs. Read our timeline of the Sudan war > |
