Dear Friend,

As our climate series continues, we are reminded of the time we have left to reverse the damage and create a more sustainable future. Young people are impacted by this devastation more than anyone else – but they are also leading the fight to fix our climate crisis before it is too late.

Last week, we highlighted the Green New Deal’s focus on transitioning to clean energy and making our electric infrastructure more reliable and resilient to the effects of climate change. But today, we’re focusing on the Green New Deal’s solutions for education and the public school system.

The Green New Deal is one of the most extensive legislation to date with innovative proposals to improve the environmental policy involving schools. It would provide grants to replace traditional school buses with electric buses, improve schools’ water systems, and provide universal school lunches.

Progressive Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York, a co-sponsor of the Green New Deal, is going the extra mile to make public education more sustainable and equitable with his landmark bill, the Green New Deal for Public Schools. The bill puts young people and public education at the center of our national response to the results of climate change by creating an Office of Sustainable Schools, upgrading every public school’s infrastructure to be zero-carbon, and providing funding to hire and train more educators and mental health professionals at public schools nationwide.

If passed, the Green New Deal for Public Schools would eliminate 78 million metric tons of CO2 annually, which is an important step forward in reducing the harmful effects of climate change.  However, there are still many factors that are sending us closer to an environmental catastrophe. The use of fossil fuels has a disproportionate impact on young people and if not mitigated could cut our futures short. That’s why we’re calling on our lawmakers to take action by investing in our education system, modern infrastructure, and conservation efforts.

In solidarity,

Future Coalition
