John, on
Wednesday, the Supreme Court heard yet another abortion case that could
impact access to emergency medical care.

The Biden administration challenged Idaho’s near-total abortion ban in
Moyle v. United States, asserting that federal law supersedes the ban and
requires Medicare-participating hospitals to offer abortion care if
necessary to provide stabilizing treatment.

The Supreme Court’s forthcoming decision could set a dangerous standard.
If Idaho’s ban is allowed to take precedence over the federal Emergency
Medical Treatment and Labor Act, it signals to other states that the Biden
administration’s work to restore abortion access in states with total or
near-total bans can be overturned.

But let’s take a closer look at how we got here,
John, because this case isn’t
just about reproductive freedom — it’s also about the reactionary and
compromised nature of the Supreme Court.

I am proud to champion reproductive freedom. In my tenure in Congress, I
have cosponsored the EACH Act, the Women’s Health Protection Act, and the
Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act. I also voted to codify
Roe v. Wade into federal law. But part of this crucial work to defend
abortion rights includes holding our ultra-partisan Supreme Court
accountable.

We wouldn’t be in this position if Senate Republicans hadn’t allowed Trump
to stack the Supreme Court with anti-abortion extremists — including Brett
Kavanaugh, whose history of sexual misconduct should have disqualified him
from this lifetime appointment from day one.

It will take bold but necessary action to reform our judicial system. I
support expanding the Supreme Court and am a lead author of the Judiciary
Act, which would expand the number of justices from 9 to 13. I also
support term limits, an enforceable code of ethics, and banning stock
trading for judges.

By holding the Supreme Court to account, we can make big changes for
abortion,
John. A fair, balanced, and
representative Court will be equipped to issue rulings that impact our
fundamental human rights — unlike our current judicial makeup.
