Earlier this month, Volkswagen workers in Tennessee did something that hadn’t been done since the 1940s — they voted to unionize. It was the first auto plant in the South to organize a union in 80 years. It’s a massive victory for UAW and workers everywhere. It shows that worker power is growing nationwide.

Republicans, like Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, aren’t happy about it. The GOP wants to help big corporations hoard record profits, not give workers a fair shake. But as UAW President Shawn Fain says: “Record profits mean record contracts.”  

Unions play a critical role in strengthening the middle class. On average, unionized workers earn 10 to 15 percent more than nonunionized workers.
