Legislative Update

This week two local Little Falls students were at the Capitol as part of the high school page program. Ellie Larson and my daughter Ainsley spent the week learning firsthand how the legislature operates and got to participate in all the goings on of our committees and floor sessions. Great work!

Congratulations to Lyla and Peyton from Aitkin Schools for being selected to participate in the All-State Choir. This is a great opportunity to join with other voices from across the state and hone their talents. Have a great time!

As the final omnibus bills are being put together by the House and Senate majorities one subject that continues to push forward through the end-of-session cleanup is the terrible gun legislation that Democrats continue to push. On Monday some of these bills will be on the house floor including proposed requirements around gun storage in your own home. Infringing on Minnesotan?s second amendment rights continues to be a top priority for Democrats, though we?ll see if they manage to get any of these to the governor?s desk.

This week the legislature has ground to a halt as a result of the burglary charges against Senator Mitchell. The Senate removed all of their calendared business for the week and the Senate GOP filed an ethics complaint calling for her removal. While I am empathetic to the difficult time Senator Mitchell is facing we cannot have a member of the legislature be the deciding vote on laws when they are facing criminal charges themselves. For her own well-being and for the institution of the Minnesota Legislature she must resign so that we can continue this session without the shadow of legal ambiguity that could result if she is convicted.

This Saturday is National Drug Takeback Day. The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is a significant initiative aimed at addressing the drug overdose crisis in the United States. It addresses the health and safety of Americans by encouraging people to safely dispose of unneeded medications, thereby preventing medication misuse and the onset of opioid addiction. The event also highlights resources for proper medication disposal, substance use disorder treatment, and education on the drug overdose epidemic.
