For many Democrats, Texas is an afterthought during a presidential election. Donors and activists tend to concentrate on “easier wins” while sending thoughts and prayers our way. “Trump will win Texas,” they say, so what’s the point of trying?

We see it every day, as the GOP expands its power and reach, seeking to undermine democracy and racial justice and environmental protections and countless other values and morals we hold sacred and dear.

We must work, each day, to hold what we have, and to win a little more breathing room for the people of this state. Even when Trump is on the ballot.

John, as we write this email, the Texas Governor is sending hundreds of state police to attack student protesters at UT-Austin. At the same time he’s deploying thousands of troopers at the border to attack migrants and asylum seekers. While suppressing trans rights, outlawing abortion, eroding democratic control of city and county governments, suppressing voting rights, and so much more. The razor edge of Trumpism is confronting us every day.

But we know that when we organize, we win. Our optimism stems from the response we get from voters in the streets of Dallas, when we share our marijuana reform petition with them. And from the people of McAllen, who are excited by our work for campaign finance reform. And from the people of Lubbock, and Harker Heights, and Lockhart, and the other communities our work has extended to.
