John,
I’m writing this email from my office in Canberra. Tomorrow Parliament will meet to pass the third coronavirus package – including a wage subsidy for Australian workers.
I know many of you have been fighting for wage subsidies. I know many of you are concerned that the Government’s proposal doesn’t go far enough.
I’m with you.
When Parliament last met, Labor was constructive. We didn’t play politics. We have approached this crisis in the spirit of bipartisanship – because that’s what this time of unprecedented crisis demands.
We won support for 230,000 students who would have otherwise missed out. We won support for even more couples where one partner has lost their job. We called for an increase in testing, an expansion of Medicare, and a freeze on evictions.
All of these measures were put forward by Labor. All of them were adopted. All of them are making a difference.
And tomorrow, when Parliament meets, we’ll keep making practical suggestions.
We want to see more done for the one million casual workers who will miss out on the wage subsidy. We want to see more done for the more than a million visa holders who require support during this crisis, too.
As MPs gather in the House of Representatives, I hope they reflect on that last word – representatives.
We’re here to represent people. We’re here to look after the sick, the vulnerable and the needy. They’re relying on us now more than ever – and we can’t let them down.
Stay healthy. Stay safe.
