John, it's Congressman Hank Johnson, and I wanted to bring recent events to your attention:
Justice Clarence Thomas is in the headlines again after he was absent during arguments last Monday and returned with no explanation, only to hear arguments on TWO January 6th cases knowing that his wife was heavily involved in the insurrectionist movement.
Where he chooses to be absent and where he chooses to be present is telling, John – and we can't afford to ignore his blatant disregard for the integrity of the Court or the lack of accountability for our Supreme Court Justices anymore.
John, Supreme Court Justices are appointed to have the final say when it comes to the rules and regulations that govern our lives, and I strongly believe that folks with this kind of power owe it to the people to take this job seriously – that's why I'm leading the charge to overhaul the Supreme Court code of conduct. The U.S. Supreme Court's code of conduct is based on an honor system, John – meaning that each justice decides for themselves when, whether and how to follow the code, and their decisions are non-reviewable and final.
Without an enforceable, binding code of conduct, the justices have proven that they can't govern themselves to put Americans first.
On top of abusing that system by not showing up to work without an explanation and refusing to recuse themselves in cases where their impartiality is highly questionable, Thomas and other justices have accepted huge undisclosed gifts from parties involved in cases before the court, have ruled to expand their own power, and continue to ignore the concerns of the people.
That's why I'm working to expand the court and require that justices follow a code of conduct that institutes transparency and applies recusal standards with an enforcement mechanism – but I need your help to continue the work.
Right now, my seat in Congress is being targeted by far-right extremists who want to derail our work to bring a binding code of conduct to the Supreme Court. But even before the right-wing supermajority took control of the Supreme Court, I've been the leading voice for court reform in Congress – and I won't stop working until we have a Supreme Court that's making decisions in the interest of the people.
