Dear Friend,
These are very difficult days. I know you know that. But as I wrote to you late the other night about the campus protests, I was filled with hope. I'll say it again. In times of crisis, young people lead the way.
I felt compelled to respond to those protests by offering comfort, in the most Arab American way possible - sharing our food. From your responses, I know many of you are also inspired by these young people and want to support them. Your feedback led to the creation of a loose campaign we're calling Feeding Students, Seeking Justice . We've been joined by our allies at the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Hilana Falafel, Red Letter Christians, and the Arab American Development Corporation. Together with our allies and your support, Falafel sandwiches were sent to Philadelphia. We've also coordinated to make sure food is shared with the University of Delaware where students are encamped outside the Biden School for Public Policy and Administration. And, because of your generosity, food will also be delivered to encampments at The New School, and Emory.
And despite the bombardment of attempts to convince us all that these students are troublemakers, ill-informed, or worse, antisemitic, never forget that the diverse students organizing these protests condemn hateful attacks on students, calls for violence, antisemitism and anti-Arab bigotry – just as we do. This movement is led by students of conscience, of all backgrounds, including many Jewish students. And this is a massive effort in the best tradition of the anti-war movement. These students are the best of us, and they are making "Good Trouble."
This is all simple, but it's also a gesture of love and support that has meaning. If you have a campus protest near you, find a way to share some food with them and let us know about it.
In hope,
-Jim
