Tomorrow, Wisconsin voters will head to the polls to vote in the presidential primary. By now, we all know the CDC recomends we stay 6 feet apart and avoid large gatherings. But every voter and poll worker who shows up tomorrow will need to ignore those CDC guidlines in order participate.
In Wisconsin, there are 3.3 million registered voters and as of today, 1.3 million of them have requested vote by mail ballots. The Republican legislature in Wisconsin has been fighting against efforts to postpone the primary and make it a mail ballot only election. They know that increasing vote-by-mail efforts increases turn out.
Republicans need to rethink their priorities when they are so determined to avoid an increase in turn-out that they are putting the lives of their own voters at risk.
Here is what we should be doing:
Automatic Vote by Mail Registration
Every registered voter should automatically recieve a vote-by-mail ballot! This makes it possible for everyone to participate in our democracy. And in this time of crisis, it allows people to participate while protecting themselves and their families.
Voters should not have to choose between their health and casting a ballot in a race this important. Especially not when we are capable of giving them an alternative.
